Engrained Sustainable Outreach at Local Elementary School

FRESH

On May 27, 2010, the Engrained team had the pleasure of speaking with over 200 first grade students at EDUPRISE, a local charter school in Queen Creek, AZ. The guest presentation from Engrained was part of the children’s six-week study of food and farming. Engrained prepared peaches from Schnepfs, a family-owned farm in Queen Creek, and carrots from Rousseau Farms in Scottsdale, AZ.

The young students learned about all the different types of produce that grows in the state of Arizona and asked Chef Jerome many inquisitive questions about how different vegetables grow. This has been one of many exciting opportunities for the Engrained team to have a positive impact – to reach out to the community and share our knowledge about healthy eating and local food with the next generation of locavores.

Changing Courses: The Real Dinner Theatre (bottom article either side)

LOCAL

On April 26th, Engrained hosted “Changing Courses: The Real Dinner Theatre,” an innovative event that brought together dining, theatre, and education to explore the impacts of food on our bodies, economies, and environment. Presented by the Herberger Institute and the Institute for Humanities Research, this celebration of food and performance featured an exclusive menu of Arizona-grown ingredients designed by three premier local chefs: Mark Tarbell of Tarbell’s, Payton Curry of Cafe Boa, and Engrained Café’s very own Jerome Fressinier.

Engrained was honored to welcome special guests Bryant Terry, eco-chef, food justice activist, and author of Vegan Soul Kitchen, and Mark Winne, seasoned food system reformer and author of Closing the Food Gap. This unique dinner theatre performance was based on research into the food systems of Arizona and the nation, aligning with Engrained Café’s commitment to foster green thinking and eating in the local community.
